AI Mode tracker: 11 tools that track Google AI Mode, checked on vendor pages

Plenty of AI visibility tools say they cover Google. Fewer cover AI Mode, and some only on their top plan or as a paid add-on. We read each vendor's pricing page to sort out which is which.

Short answerAn AI Mode tracker runs your prompts through Google AI Mode on a schedule and reports how often your brand is mentioned and cited. Tools that track it include Semrush ($99, with ChatGPT), SE Ranking, Peec AI, Ahrefs Brand Radar, LLM Pulse, Rankscale, Scrunch and Keyword.com. AthenaHQ and Otterly.AI charge more for it; Profound includes it only on Enterprise.
Key takeaways
  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode cited the same URLs only 13.7% of the time across 540,000 query pairs (Ahrefs, September 2025), so an AI Overviews tracker is no proxy for AI Mode.
  • Search Console's Generative AI report shows impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode together, with no queries and no clicks listed.
  • The cheapest published routes to AI Mode data are Keyword.com credits (0.25 credits per prompt run), Otterly.AI Lite plus a $9 add-on, and LLM Pulse from 49 euros a month.
  • AthenaHQ's free tier, Profound's trial, ZeroRank, HubSpot AEO and Seobility don't list AI Mode.
  • Semrush's $99 toolkit tracks 25 prompts daily on ChatGPT and AI Mode; AI Mode in Position Tracking needs that toolkit or Semrush One.

What does an AI Mode tracker measure?

An AI Mode tracker measures whether Google's AI Mode names your brand and links to your pages when someone asks a question in your category. It sends a fixed set of prompts to AI Mode on a schedule, stores every answer, and reports mention rate, which of your URLs were cited, the order you appeared in, sentiment, and which competitors and sources showed up instead.

The audience is big enough to justify it now. Google said AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users in May 2026, about a year after launch (figures collected in our AI search statistics). And AI Mode is not AI Overviews with more words. In Ahrefs' comparison of 540,000 query pairs, the two features gave answers that were 86% semantically similar but shared only 13.7% of their cited URLs3 (Ahrefs). Being cited in one tells you very little about the other.

How does AI Mode tracking work?

The tool acts like a searcher. For each prompt it opens AI Mode from a set country (and sometimes language), captures the generated answer and the links Google shows beside it, then parses both for your brand, your domain and your competitors. It repeats that daily or weekly and turns the runs into rates.

Three details decide how good the data is. First, AI Mode builds answers with query fan-out: Google describes it as a set of concurrent related queries the model generates to find more relevant pages from the Search index1 (Google Search Central). That's why a page that ranks nowhere for your prompt can still be cited, and why fan-out coverage matters more than one keyword. Second, there's no ranked list, so "position" means order of mention or order of citation, and vendors define it differently. Third, answers vary from run to run, so a tracker needs repeated runs before a percentage means anything.

Vendors say little about collection methods. SE Ranking says its tool captures results from live AI Mode conversations and maps position, citation order and link placement6. Rankscale lets you set a region and a daily or weekly schedule per search term12. Ahrefs takes a different route, with an index it says holds about 89 million monthly AI Mode prompts modeled from search data10. Ask any vendor you trial three questions: logged in or out, which location, and how many runs sit behind each percentage.

What does Google Search Console show about AI Mode?

Search Console shows impressions, and only impressions. Its Generative AI performance report counts how often links to your site appeared in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and Google says it reached all websites worldwide as of August 31, 20262 (Search Console Help).

  • Dimensions: pages, countries, devices and dates. Google's help page lists no queries and no clicks.
  • AI Mode and AI Overviews come as one feature set; the help page doesn't describe a way to split them.
  • Several results from your site in one response count as one impression in the chart total.
  • The same impressions are already inside the Web search type of the main Performance report, so don't add the two together.
  • Sites with too few generative AI impressions may not see the report at all.

That makes Search Console good for one question (which of my pages get linked in Google's AI features, and is that growing?) and useless for the ones buyers care about: for which prompts, against which competitors, and do we get named? That gap is what the paid tools fill. The AI Overview tracker guide covers the report in more detail.

The 11 AI Mode trackers

Suites first, then specialists, then budget and enterprise options at the ends. Pick by what you already pay for before anything else.

1. Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit

Semrush's toolkit is the most direct AI Mode product from a big SEO suite. For $99 a month it tracks 25 prompts daily on Google AI Mode and ChatGPT, and 50 more prompts cost $60 a month. Semrush One plans include 50 to 200 prompts. There's no free trial4 (Semrush). With the toolkit or Semrush One, Position Tracking also lists Google AI Mode next to Google, Bing and ChatGPT Search as an engine you can track5. Twenty-five prompts is enough for one product line and not much more.

2. SE Ranking

SE Ranking has a dedicated AI Mode tracker that records mentions of your brand and links to your site, citation order, link prominence and the competitors and source types (media, blogs, forums) cited instead, across multiple countries and languages6. Core is $129 a month and includes 100 prompts tracked daily across 5 LLMs; Growth is $279 for 250. The trial is 14 days, no card (SE Ranking pricing)7. Per tracked prompt it's one of the cheapest options here, with the trade-off that its AI reports go less deep than a specialist's.

3. Peec AI

Peec lists AI Mode among the models you choose at setup, and every self-serve plan includes three: Starter is $95 for 50 prompts run daily, Pro $245 for 150, Advanced $495 for 3508 (Peec AI pricing). Its AI Mode page reports mention frequency, citations, sentiment and a visibility score built from citation frequency and prominence. If you choose AI Mode, AI Overviews and ChatGPT, you've used your three, and a fourth costs $30 to $140 a month. We compare its rivals in Peec AI alternatives.

4. Ahrefs Brand Radar

Ahrefs offers a free AI Mode tracker with no signup that shows how many AI Mode answers mention your brand, mentions over time, and the top five topics, cited domains and cited pages9 (Ahrefs). It's a limited preview and doesn't benchmark competitors. The full data is in Brand Radar, at $199 a month for selected platforms or $699 for all of them, including 2,500 custom prompt checks a month on the all-platforms tier. Treat index prompts as market research; they're modeled, not your buyers' words.

5. LLM Pulse

LLM Pulse puts Google AI Mode and AI Overviews on every plan alongside ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Weekly plans start at 49 euros a month for 50 prompts; the daily price set starts at 79 euros11 (LLM Pulse pricing). The 14-day trial on weekly plans asks for a card. It's the cheapest way we found to get both of Google's AI surfaces without add-ons.

6. Rankscale

Rankscale charges 0.25 credits for an AI Mode query, the same as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, so Pro's 1,200 credits at $99 a month cover up to 4,800 such answers13. You set a region and a daily or weekly schedule for each search term, and it reports visibility, mentions, citations and share of voice12 (Rankscale). Per-term schedules are handy: daily for money prompts, weekly for the rest. Pro has a 7-day trial.

7. Scrunch

Scrunch lists Google AI Mode with ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews and Meta as its coverage. Starter is $300 month to month or $250 billed annually for 350 prompts; Growth is $500 for 70014 (Scrunch pricing). It makes sense when AI Mode is one of several engines you need on a large prompt set. The pricing page doesn't state run frequency, so ask.

8. AthenaHQ

AthenaHQ adds AI Mode on its $295 Starter plan, together with Claude, Grok, DeepSeek, Meta AI and Mistral, for 11 models and 3,600 credits a month; the free Essential tier doesn't include it15 (AthenaHQ pricing). One credit is one response, so AI Mode competes with ten other models for the same credits. Our AthenaHQ alternatives page works through that math.

9. Otterly.AI

Otterly.AI sells AI Mode as an add-on: $9 a month on the $29 Lite plan (15 prompts), $59 on Standard and $149 on Premium16 (Otterly.AI pricing). Lite plus AI Mode is $38 a month, the lowest flat-price AI Mode tracking we found. Fifteen prompts won't cover a category, but it'll tell you whether AI Mode names you on your top questions.

10. Keyword.com

Keyword.com prices AI tracking in credits: a Google AI Mode check costs 0.25 credits per prompt per update, the same as AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot. The AI Visibility plan starts at $9.80 a month ($7.83 annually) for 20 credits, which covers 80 AI Mode prompt runs, for example 20 prompts weekly17 (Keyword.com pricing). The trial is 14 days with 100 keywords and 20 credits, no card. It suits SEO teams that want AI checks next to classic rank tracking.

11. Profound

Profound tracks Google AI Mode on its Enterprise plan, among up to nine engines run daily; the free trial covers only ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews18 (Profound pricing). No paid price is published. It's an enterprise purchase, covered in Profound alternatives.

Which popular tools don't track AI Mode?

These came up in our research as AI visibility tools, but their own pages don't name Google AI Mode:

  • ZeroRank lists 17 platforms, including Google AI Overviews, without naming AI Mode19.
  • HubSpot AEO tracks ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity20.
  • Seobility's AI Overview tracker covers AI Overviews only.

Vendors add engines often, so if one of these is otherwise your favorite, ask before ruling it out.

How do you track AI Mode by hand?

You can get a usable baseline in an hour a week without a tool. Write 20 prompts your buyers would ask (problem questions, "best X for Y", and comparisons naming competitors), then run each one in AI Mode from a logged-out browser window in your target country. Log every run in a sheet with these columns:

date | prompt | prompt type (problem / category / comparison / brand)
brand mentioned (Y/N) | mention order (1, 2, 3, none)
our URL cited (Y/N) | cited URL
competitors named | top 3 cited domains | sentiment (pos / neutral / neg)

Weekly metrics
mention rate = runs with brand mentioned / total runs
citation rate = runs with our URL cited / total runs
share of voice = our mentions / all brand mentions across the set

Run each prompt twice per session and on two different days before you trust a percentage. When the sheet passes 50 prompts or you need daily data, that's the point a paid tracker earns its fee. For metric definitions and prompt-set design, see how to measure AI visibility.

What can't an AI Mode tracker tell you?

It can't tell you what a given buyer saw. Logged-in users get personal context the tracker doesn't reproduce, and AI Mode is a conversation: most trackers capture the first answer and miss the follow-up turns where a shortlist often narrows.

It can't give you a stable rank either. In a SparkToro and Gumshoe study, AI tools returned the same brand list twice for a prompt less than 1 in 100 times21 (Search Engine Journal). Mention rate across many runs is the number to watch. ChatGPT has the same problem, which our ChatGPT rank tracker guide covers.

And it can't connect visibility to traffic on its own. Clicks from AI Mode reach your analytics as Google organic traffic, and Search Console reports AI impressions without queries or clicks. Pair the tracker's citation data with Search Console's page-level AI impressions to see whether the pages being cited are the ones gaining. If you're rarely cited at all, a tracker won't fix it; work through the GEO audit checklist first.

Which AI Mode tracker should you pick?

  • Already on Semrush: add the AI Visibility Toolkit and track your 25 most commercial prompts on AI Mode and ChatGPT.
  • SEO team wanting one bill: SE Ranking Core, 100 prompts daily across Google's AI surfaces and three chat engines.
  • AI Mode and AI Overviews matter most, budget under $100: LLM Pulse, or Keyword.com credits if you want pay-per-check.
  • In-house team tracking daily across three engines: Peec AI.
  • Need AI Mode plus Claude and Meta: Scrunch.
  • Just want to know where you stand today: the free Ahrefs preview plus the free Arobis AI visibility checker (which covers ChatGPT), then a hand-run sheet for a month.
Our takeDon't buy an AI Mode tracker on the strength of a vendor saying "we cover Google". Ask for AI Mode by name, on the plan you'll pay for, and how many runs back each number. If your buyers are B2B and Google-first, track AI Mode and AI Overviews as two separate engines; with only about one cited URL in seven shared between them, a single "Google AI" score hides more than it shows. For the wider list of trackers across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude, see the best AI visibility tools.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI Mode tracker?

An AI Mode tracker is software that sends a fixed list of prompts to Google AI Mode on a schedule, stores each answer, and reports whether your brand is mentioned, which of your pages are cited, which competitors appear and how that changes over time. Because AI Mode returns a written answer instead of ten blue links, trackers measure mention and citation rates rather than a ranking position.

Does Google Search Console show AI Mode data?

Partly. Search Console's Generative AI performance report, rolled out to all sites by August 31, 2026, shows impressions when links to your site appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, broken down by page, country, device and date. Google's help page lists no clicks and no queries, and doesn't describe a way to separate AI Mode from AI Overviews.

Can I track Google AI Mode for free?

For a snapshot, yes. Ahrefs offers a free AI Mode tracker preview with no signup, showing how many AI Mode answers mention your brand and the top cited pages. For ongoing tracking you can run 20 prompts by hand each week in a logged-out browser and log the results. Cheap paid options start with Keyword.com credits and Otterly.AI Lite's $9 AI Mode add-on.

Is tracking AI Overviews the same as tracking AI Mode?

No. They are separate Google features with different sources. Ahrefs compared 540,000 query pairs in September 2025 and found the answers were 86% semantically similar but only 13.7% of cited URLs overlapped. A tool that only tracks AI Overviews tells you little about AI Mode, so check that AI Mode is named on the plan you are buying.

Which AI visibility tools don't track AI Mode?

On their own pricing pages, ZeroRank doesn't name Google AI Mode among its 17 platforms, HubSpot AEO lists only ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and Seobility's tracker covers AI Overviews only. AthenaHQ's free tier and Profound's trial also leave it out: AthenaHQ adds AI Mode on its $295 Starter plan, Profound on Enterprise.

How often should I track AI Mode?

Daily for the 20 to 50 prompts that name your category or competitors, weekly for the long tail. AI answers change from run to run, so the trend in mention rate across many runs matters more than any single day. Weekly runs on long-tail prompts give you the same direction at roughly a quarter of the cost of daily runs.
