Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit review: what it tracks, what it costs and who should skip it

An honest, sourced look at Semrush's AI visibility product: the reports, the engines each one covers, the prompt limits, the price and the cheaper or deeper alternatives.

Short answerThe Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit is a $99-a-month Semrush add-on that shows how often ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, AI Overviews, Gemini and, in one report, Perplexity mention your brand. It draws on a database of over 317 million prompts plus 25 you track yourself. It suits existing Semrush users; teams needing Claude, Copilot or many custom prompts should look elsewhere.
Key takeaways
  • The standalone toolkit costs $99 a month, has no free trial, and includes 1 project, 25 tracked prompts and 1 brand domain. Fifty more prompts cost $60 a month.
  • Semrush One bundles it with the SEO suite at $199, $299 or $549 a month, with 50, 100 or 200 tracked prompts.
  • The prompt database holds over 317 million prompts and responses across ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode, and Semrush says responses are captured from real requests, not LLM APIs.
  • Engine coverage differs by report. Prompt Tracking lets you pick ChatGPT Search, AI Mode or Gemini; Brand Performance covers AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini and updates weekly.
  • Claude, Copilot, Grok and DeepSeek are only in Semrush Enterprise AIO, which has no public price.

What does the Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit include?

It's Semrush's product for measuring how AI assistants talk about your brand, sold as its own toolkit next to the SEO, content and local toolkits. Older help pages call it the "AI SEO Toolkit" or "AI Toolkit," which is why people search for "Semrush AI toolkit" and land on the same thing. You can buy it alone, get it inside a Semrush One plan, or move up to Semrush Enterprise AIO, a separate enterprise product with more engines127.

The toolkit does two different jobs, and it helps to keep them apart. The first is market research: Semrush runs a huge set of prompts it chose itself and lets you look up any domain's AI visibility in that data, the way Semrush's organic research reports estimate rankings. The second is tracking: you enter your own prompts and Semrush checks them daily. The research side is broad and needs no setup. The tracking side is where you measure the prompts your buyers actually type, and it's the part with tight limits.

What does it track? The reports, one by one

The toolkit has six working areas. This table summarizes what each shows, using Semrush's own knowledge base descriptions.

Sources: Visibility Overview and Competitor Research14, Brand Performance5, Prompt Tracking3, Site Audit and the feature list6.

The report most people buy it for is Visibility Overview, because it works on day one: type a domain, get a score and a list of prompts. The report that tells you the most is Brand Performance's Narrative Drivers, because it lists the domains AI cites for non-branded questions in your category. That's your outreach list. Prompt Tracking is the least generous: 25 prompts on the base plan, desktop only, and Semrush says Estimated Traffic and Share of Voice "are not available" there3.

Which AI engines does Semrush cover?

It depends on the report, and Semrush's own pages don't fully agree. Here's what each page says:

Semrush pageEngines it lists
AI Visibility data methodology (database reports)ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode
Same page, Prompt Tracking sectionGoogle AI Mode, AI Overviews, Gemini, ChatGPT Search
Prompt Tracking help pageChatGPT Search, Google AI Mode or Gemini (selectable)
Brand Performance help pageGoogle AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini
Enterprise comparison table, AI Visibility toolkit rowChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini
Enterprise AIOChatGPT, AI Overview, AI Mode, Perplexity, Copilot, Grok, Gemini, Claude, DeepSeek

Sources: methodology4, Prompt Tracking3, Brand Performance5, Enterprise7.

Two practical consequences. Perplexity appears only in Brand Performance, so you can't track your own Perplexity prompts daily on the toolkit. And if AI Overviews matter to you, confirm inside your workspace that Prompt Tracking offers it, because the help page for that feature lists only three engines. If you need Claude or Copilot at all, you need Enterprise AIO or another vendor.

Our takeThe database reports are the reason to buy. Being able to type a competitor's domain and see which prompts mention them, with no setup, is something most dedicated trackers can't do, and it's the closest thing to Semrush's organic research for AI. The tracking side is thin for the price: 25 prompts at $99 is $3.96 a prompt, more than double what Peec AI or Otterly.AI charge for daily tracking. Buy it for research and competitor gaps; don't buy it as your only tracker.

Where does the data come from, and how accurate is it?

Semrush says its database holds "over 317 million prompts and responses on ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, and AI Mode," and that responses "are captured from real requests and not via any APIs of LLMs"4 (Semrush methodology). The prompts come from AI search clickstream data and Google keyword data, grouped into topics. The same page says it covers 117 regional databases, while the main toolkit page lists 42 regions for the research reports1. Brand Performance covers 68,500 locations and 53 languages5.

Semrush is upfront about accuracy. Its methodology page says AI answers change quickly and are personalized, so no platform can give exact visibility numbers, and its metrics are meant as "reliable directional signals"4. We agree, and it applies to every tool in this category. Two things follow:

  • Read the AI Visibility Score as a benchmark against competitors in the same report. A score of 40 means little alone; 40 against a competitor's 65 on the same prompt set is a finding.
  • Semrush picks the database prompts. If your category is narrow (say, payroll software for Canadian construction firms), check how many database prompts actually match your buyers before trusting the score. Prompt Tracking with your own prompts is the fix, within its 25-prompt limit.

Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit pricing: what will you pay?

The toolkit costs $99 a month on its own, and there's no free trial for it1 (Semrush knowledge base). The Semrush One plans bundle AI tracking with the SEO toolkit and carry a 7-day trial on the main plans2.

OptionMonthly priceBilled annuallyTracked promptsWhat else

Add-ons on the standalone toolkit: 50 more prompts for $60 a month, extra Brand Performance domains at $99 each, and $99 for each extra user1. Each domain slot has a 14-day cooldown after you change it, and subfolders can't be analyzed in Brand Performance5. If you already pay $139 a month for Semrush's SEO plan, Semrush One Starter at $199 is the cheaper way in: $60 more for 50 prompts, against $99 for 25 on the standalone toolkit. Our AI visibility tool pricing comparison puts these numbers next to ten other vendors.

What are the limits that matter in practice?

These are the ones that changed our recommendation. The first column is what Semrush's documentation says; the second is what it means when you sit down to use it.

LimitWhat Semrush documentsWhat it means in practice
Tracked prompts25 on the $99 toolkit; +50 for $60 a month1A buyer prompt set for one product line is 30 to 50 prompts, so most teams pay for the add-on in month one
Device"Only desktop searches are supported"3Phone sessions in AI Mode and Gemini go unmeasured
Metrics in Prompt TrackingShare of Voice and Estimated Traffic "are not available"3Share of voice only exists in Brand Performance, on Semrush's prompts, not on yours
Brand Performance refreshWeekly5Fine for a monthly report; too slow to see whether last Tuesday's page change landed
Brand domains1 included; $99 per extra; 14-day cooldown after a swap; no subfolders5An agency with 10 clients pays $891 a month in extra domains before adding prompts
Topic volumeAvailable in 15 countries3Outside those markets you track prompts with no demand data beside them
Exports10 CSV exports a day1Enough for one person; tight if several people pull data for reports on the same day

Who should buy it, and who should skip it?

Here's how we'd decide, by situation:

Your situationVerdictWhy
You already pay $139 a month for Semrush SEOBuy, as Semrush One Starter$60 more gets 50 prompts; the standalone toolkit costs $99 for 25
You want to see which competitors AI names in your category and which sites it citesBuyThe database reports do this for any domain with no prompt writing, which few dedicated trackers offer
You need 100+ of your own prompts tracked dailySkipPeec AI tracks 150 prompts on three models for $245; Otterly.AI tracks 100 on four engines for $189

You're an agency with many client brandsSkip$99 per extra brand domain adds up faster than workspace or answer-based pricing
You report monthly to leadership and want one familiar toolBuyWeekly Brand Performance data is enough for a monthly deck, and it sits beside your SEO data

How to evaluate it in your first month

With no trial on the standalone toolkit, your first paid month is the trial. Use it on a fixed plan so you can decide at day 30:

Week 1 Visibility Overview for your domain + 3 competitors.
Export prompts where competitors appear and you don't (10 CSV exports a day).
Week 1 Load your 25 most valuable buyer prompts into Prompt Tracking
(category and comparison prompts first, branded last).
Week 2 Run the same 10 prompts by hand in ChatGPT and AI Mode, logged out.
Compare the brands named with what Prompt Tracking reports.
Week 3 Brand Performance > Narrative Drivers: list the top cited domains.
Mark which ones name you. That's your outreach list.
Week 4 Decide: keep (research is useful, tracking matches manual checks),
upgrade to Semrush One, or move tracking to a dedicated tool.

The week-2 manual check matters. Every tool samples AI answers differently, and the only way to know whether a tool's numbers reflect what your buyers see is to compare a handful against runs you did yourself. Our guide to measuring AI visibility covers how many runs you need before a difference means anything.

Frequently asked questions

Should you pay for the Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit?

For existing Semrush users, yes, mainly for the database reports that show which prompts mention you and your competitors with no setup. As a standalone tracker it's expensive: $99 a month for 25 prompts is about $3.96 a prompt, against roughly $1.90 on Peec AI or Otterly.AI. Buy it for research, and pair it with a tracker if you need more prompts.

Does Semrush track ChatGPT?

Yes. ChatGPT is in the prompt database behind Visibility Overview, in Brand Performance, and it's one of the engines you can select in Prompt Tracking, where Semrush calls it ChatGPT Search. Semrush says it captures responses from real requests rather than through LLM APIs, which is closer to what a logged-out user sees than API output.

Does Semrush AI Visibility track Perplexity and Claude?

Perplexity appears in the Brand Performance reports but not in Prompt Tracking or the main prompt database. Claude isn't in the standard toolkit at all. Semrush Enterprise AIO lists Claude, Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek and Perplexity among nine engines, but its price isn't published, so you'd need a sales quote.

Is there a free trial of the Semrush AI toolkit?

Not for the standalone toolkit; Semrush's knowledge base says it doesn't offer one. Semrush's main plans, including Semrush One, advertise a 7-day free trial, and Semrush's free plan includes a basic AI visibility score. The practical route is a Semrush One trial if you want to test AI tracking before paying.

What's the difference between the AI Visibility Toolkit and Semrush One?

The toolkit is AI visibility alone at $99 a month with 25 tracked prompts. Semrush One bundles the SEO toolkit with AI visibility, from $199 a month with 50 prompts up to $549 with 200. If you'd otherwise pay $139 for Semrush SEO, Semrush One is the cheaper way to get both.

How accurate is Semrush's AI Visibility Score?

Semrush itself calls its metrics directional signals, because AI answers change between runs and vary by user. Use the score to compare brands on the same prompt set and to spot trends over time, not as an exact share of what buyers see. Check a sample of prompts by hand to confirm the tool matches real answers in your category.
